Tanzu Kubernetes Grid – Create Photon Template in vCenter

In order for Tanzu to spin up management and guest clusters, it’s needs an ova template to use. This photon ova will be used for the control and data plane.

  • Import the OVA in to vCenter
  • Convert the VM to a template

Import the OVA in to vCenter

Right click on the VM folder and select Deploy OVF Template.
Select the photon template ova file and click Next.
Select the correct folder again a name for the VM, you can name it anything or leave it as the default.
Select the vCenter cluster
Verify and click next.
Accept the license agreement
Select your storage, in my case i’m using vSAN.
Select the management nic
Verify all is correct and click Finish
You should see the ova importing into vCenter. Give it a few minutes and we can proceed to the next step.

Convert the VM to a template

The last step is simple, just convert the newly created VM, into a template.

Right click on the VM, goto Template, and click “Convert to Template”
Click Yes
